You asked for it! So here it is! My “Hardcore Mini Cassette Tape Quilt Pattern!” It’s ALL done AND you could win it during Sew Mama Sew’s Giveaway Day!
PLUS, I’m throwing in SIX Cotton+Steel Fat Quarters! The winner will be selected at random on Wednesday, Dec 16th. The PDF pattern will be sent to your inbox (emailed) and the Cotton+Steel bundle will be sent to your mailbox (snail mailed)! BUT you gotta leave a comment answering the question below. Sew Mama Sew rules. International entries welcome.
But hey, don’t worry if you don’t win, I’ve listed the pattern on my Etsy store. Feel free to have a snoop around. I only have the one pattern right now but I look forward to filling it up with lots of goodies soon.
Now, whether you’re an ambitious paper piecing newbie or a slick experienced type, a general knowledge of paper piecing and quilt construction is a must for this pattern. However, I’ve included a list of resources to get you out of any jam. Don’t worry, I got your back.
The finished quilt measures – 26″ x 28″ (66cm X 71cm)
The pattern includes:
- 16 pages in total
- 11 pages of instructions
- 10 paper piece cassette tape patterns
- A material and fabric needed list (for batting, backing fabric and binding included. However, the pattern doesn’t include instructions on quilt sandwiching, quilting or binding)
- Block and Quilt Keys
- Assembly instructions
- Tips on how to customize your cassette labels (my favorite part!)
- Background cutting diagrams (plus a cheater sheet to make life easier)
- A Resource list
- Measurements in both inches and centimeters
- The pattern can be printed on standard letter sized paper
Once you have the pattern you can make all kinds of cool things too! Like this:
Isn’t it outstanding?! This Christmas mug rug was made by pattern tester extraordinaire Jonna (@bespokeoutlaw on Instagram). Coming this new year I’ll be posting other cassette tape projects you can make with the cassette tape paper piecing patterns. Stay tuned!
And as always, for Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Days the BIG question… I always love the answers. A few years ago I asked about who’s number you’d want to find in a Matchbook. I was giving way one of my Match Needle Books. The answers were a mix of sweet and naughty. Hey, tis the season! (PS since then, I wrote a pattern for the Match Needle Books, it’s FREE. It’s over there on the right hand side.) Okay, here’s the question to enter the Giveaway:
You’re going on a long road trip with someone you have a crush on. You haven’t told them yet. To let them know and set the tone for the trip, what would be the very first song you’d put on your mixed tape?
Good luck and if you’re on Instagram, I hang out there as @lysaflower. If you’re on Facebook I have a page there too. That’s one of the great things of Sew Mama Sew’s Giveaway Day, I’ve met some pretty fantastic people through it. I look forward to meeting you!
Happy #sewinglikeamothertrucker!

Man, this mini is so cute! If I were going on a road trip with a crush I’d definitely start my mix tape with “Get out the Map” by the Indigo Girls. Love and road tripping all in one song!
SOooo love this pattern, but you know that! lol!!
Ohhh I just can’t wait to make this! Although I can ensure it won’t turn out as awesome as yours but I will do my best Thanks Lisa!
Oh my goodness! What a totally rad giveaway!!! And I love the Poison cassette in your picture. I would have to say the first song on my playlist would be “True” by Spandau Ballet. Thanks for the awesome giveaway and you definitely have a new follower!
I have those same little ice cream cups! My grandparents passed them down to me. I LOVE them, they are the perfect size! And I love this pattern!
Anyway, on to my entry response: Crazy Love by Van Morrison. But maybe I have a soft spot for that song because it was me and my husband’s first dance at our wedding!
Ummmm I LOVE this! My song would be Jim Croce . . . I have to say I love you in a song. Original, I know. But I really do love Jim Croce.
Hmmmmmm that’s a tough one. Maybe an old Celine song, I’m your Lady, and You are my Man! lol
Permalink
I love your giveaway questions!!! AND you pattern ~ I would love to have the pattern!! I’m thinking maybe Uptown Funk. It always makes we get funky! So, I’m not real romantic…its more about fun!!
yikes – I reckon ‘I wanna hold your hand’ the Beatles? or perhaps ‘Buddy Holly’ by Weezer?
For my song I would probably pick Iron and wines version of “Such Great Heights”. Love that sound! And I love this pattern! Great give away!
What about “Summer of 69″ from Bryan Adams… A classic and for me setting the right atmosphere
Permalink
First song would be “Your Song” but with Euan McGregor singing it… Can’t beat a bit of Moulin Rouge
Permalink
This one’s easy — my huge crush is on Hozier, so the first song I’d play would be one of his — either “To Be Alone” or “Like Real People Do.” Great question and I am drooling big time over this giveaway!
I would just put it all out there and put on Push it by Salt n Pepa!
Let’s be seasonal and cheesy and say “All I want for Christmas is you”
Hmmm…that’s a tough one! I’m showing my age, but probably “I’ll Be There”!
Oooh! Good question! I think for now, I’d have to do “It’s just a little crush” by Britney.
This is so cute and I know that I would love to be able to make this myself and then give it to my grandchild. It’s like a quilt from my world. Thank you for one of the greatest giveaway ever. AND you have even included 6 fat quarters from Cotton and Steel. Great fabric from a great manufacturer. Thank you for taking the time to be a part of the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day and being so generous with your gift. Happy Holidays to you. Oh yes, I would play the songs I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Happy Together.

I would go old-school 90’s, like Ace of Base. Awesome. My email is lehendrickson(at)gmail(dot)com.
Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran. Awesome pattern!
What a cute idea for a quilt.
My song choice would be “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder.
Okay, that is an awesome question! I like Mary Ann’s idea “All I want for Christmas is you” or maybe Billy Joel, “She’s Got a Way”
Well, wouldn’t you just know that I would LOVE to win this! As a newbie quilter, building up a nice stash can be a bit daunting, both for fabrics and patterns.
So, in answer to your question, the song I would put first on my mix tape would be a golden oldie (of course), the Everley brothers’ All I Have to Do is Dream.
I have never been one to make mix tapes… I really don’t know! I do know that I love Push by Sarah McLachlan though, I made sure it was in our wedding playlist. But that doesn’t really set the theme for letting someone know you have a crush on them, it definitely is about a relationship already in progress.

Super good question! I think Love Story by Taylor Swift.
I have the most terrible memory for songs… I’m like I like this song. People ask me: Who is it by? Don’t know… What is it called? Don’t know… What are some of the words? Don’t know… So this is pretty much an impossible question for me. But perhaps since you have him cornered in the car and there is no escape (for either of you!) it could be a good time to chat about how you feel. After all men generally don’t do so well with the subtle hint.
I’d put “Fat Bottom Girls” by Queen. It was my first dance wedding song and certainly a conversation starter.
Hmm…a very naughty song by Nine Inch Nails comes to mind…hehehe
Permalink
Crush Daryl Dixon from the walking dead. The song Born to be Wild! Dreaming of riding away into the sunset on the back of his bike. Of course zombies will prolly be chasing us. No worries it’s Daryl. Lol!
Your designs are seriously fabulous!!!! Seriously!!! I say….Let’s Give ‘Em Somethin’ to Talk About might get the hint across! Thanks for the fun!
I was struggling to decide what song would be first on that mix tape when I saw another post and it is so perfect! All I Want for Christmas is You.
That’s simple it would have to be Let’s Get it On by Marvin Gaye. Oh or if you’re feeling really naughty then Feelin’ Love by Paula Cole. Gotta be feeling particularly frisky and naughty for that one though.
I’d start my playlist with A Small Victory by Faith No More… I love songs with content, not just lyrics. Thanks for the chance!
Thanks for a great giveaway! Seeings how I’m engaged and happening to be going on a long road trip in 2 weeks I’d have to go with a song that we can both sing to and be goofy (even if it were just a secret crush I’d probably go with this option). Right now our favorite is the Christmas song where they say Christmas over and over again in the background. We enjoy being extra goofy with that one, trying out all the different ways we could possibly shout out that it’s Christmas
Permalink
That’s so cute! Um..that might be the hardest question ever, all the things I can think of are LOVE songs and that might be a bit heavy for expressing a crush I’m going to go with the wholly inappropriate Violent Femmes “Blister in the Sun” since they are my favorite commuting/traffic jam music anyway
Permalink
Hooked on a feeling, it’s a great song! Thanks!
Oh.My.Goodness!!! What a great pattern!
I still have so many cassettes in my collection . . . . I just can’t seem to part with them and I get really upset when the tape breaks.
Thank you for the giveaway. . . . and have a wonderful day.
Sherry V.
Something fun – maybe Polka Dot Bikini???
The Cure “Friday I’m in Love”
This pattern is so cool. Hmm… maybe would you go with me? by Dierks Bentley. that’s a fun one and would fit the road trip theme.
Hmmm… I think I would play 500 miles by the proclaimers
Permalink
I think I’d crank the heat up right away with some Barry White!
Love the casettes, cant beat them for a mixtape…and what a cracking quilt!

Cute quilt! Beach boys – Good Vibrations!
There is a Light that Never Goes Out by The Smiths, sung from the POV of someone driving in a car with their crush and would rather die in weird ways than to have it end
Permalink
So rad! I’d put in my 1985 mix tape that I got for Christmas from my uncle Michael and fast-forward to Hold Me Now (Thompson Twins). Oh yeah!
You are my sunshine =)
Great pattern! I definitely had some of those tapes in that photo! I still have my We Are the World floating around somewhere. Maybe a tie between Wouldn’t It Be Nice or Friday I’m in Love. I’m looking forward to reading these answers!
Beatles I just wanna hold your hand
Permalink
Righteous Brothers – Unchained Melody
Permalink
Oh golly, I’m terrible at mixed tapes! The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything? :D:D
Permalink
HEY I just found you on Sew Mama Sew and it’s like lightning hit! LOL You’re my kinda person! (In a non-creeper way, I promise)…
I would put on some old school Journey probably, to signal my crush….or mabey Bryan Adams, Heaven…. geez,it’s tough because I basically communicate through my playlist, so every song has it’s perfect place. Maybe “right here waiting for you” my Richard Marx OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG hahahahahahahah yeah that one.
Okay I’m getting weird now so I’ll go.
Peace out.
Followed you on IG too. I’m buying this mix tape pattern , and if I win the free copy I’ll gift it to my BFF who likes Rich’s muzac too.
Word.
It would probably be something funny….like, “I like big butts, and I cannot lie…”
What an awesome giveaway! Thanks heaps for the chance!
For the song…. hmmmm….
Maybe Night in my Veins by The Pretenders? or Lover, You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckley?
And that pattern! Oh, the things I’d make! I’d love to make a lap quilt for a friend who collects cassettes, and I’d REALLY love to blow up the place mat pattern, use some sturdy home dec fabrics, and makes a huge floor pillow tape!
I’d probably throw all subtlety out the window and pick something like ‘Hot Stuff’
Permalink
i love your pattern! I will be aging myself if I say “Baby I’m a want you” by Bread. That should pretty much send the message. Thanks
Permalink
Lovely pattern! I think it would be something from his favorite band or singer. So it depends on him thanks for the chance!!
Wow, I stink at songs. I can’t think of a single song except for Hit the Road Jack and that would not be appropriate as the first song for a road trip! Lol…. Love the fabric and the pattern though!
“Falling in love in a coffee shop” by Landon Pigg. Hands down the most romantic song when he sings “I think that possibly maybe I’m falling for you………… yes there’s a chance that I’ve fallen quite hard over you….” Ugh, I die!
Cute! That turned out awesome! The first song that I would put on is Backstreet Boys ” I want it that way” ! Thanks!
Ha ha – mixtapes to set the mood. Love Story by Taylor Swift.
The song…”Bad Reputation” Joan Jett… or for a little more ambiance… “I Think I’m In Love” Beck… hee hee. Thanks for the chance, LOVE the pattern so much!!!

“All I want for Christmas Is You” great pattern.

What a cool pattern! And fun question!!
I think if I had to pick just one song it would have to be something smooth like ” Fade into You” by Mazzy Star or ” Wicked Game” by Chris Isaac.

“Listen.
Do you want to know a secret?
Do you promise not to tell?
Whoa, oh, oh.

Oh, if only I dared doing that… maybe I wouldn’t be single
There’s this song by Sinead O’Connor that’s perfect…something about daffodils.
Shoot, I don’t know the name of it — there was this song back when I was in college about someone missing someone far away, it had the phrase “now I lay me down to sleep”. I’d pick that one, because most of my husband’s and my dating relationship happened long distance.
Oh my God, I’ve been married so long I don’t even know how to answer that question… Maybe “Friday I’m in love” by the Cure
Permalink
I would put on Bonnie Raitt’s Road Tested CD and play the whole thing!

Uh-oh. I can’t ever remember song names! But I’d totally do the one that goes like (*hums a bit*)….ya know? It’ll be AWESOME.
Thanks for the giveaway
Permalink
Too hard! You’re making me think! I’d probably pick a John Denver song.
That’s a great question! I’d probably play some Beatles songs including “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” That answer gives away my age doesn’t it?
Michelle Shocked: If Love Was a Train!
Well, I’m married, so that would be awkward, LOL. When I was single though, I did adore the song “I love you” by Natasha Beddingfield.
When a Man Loves a Woman. Haha! I can’t think of anything. But I’m loving the fabric!!
Oh no! That’s so hard, the first song totally sets the mood. I’d have to say it depends on who said crush was, but perhaps I Want You, by Mr. Dylan…
Permalink
Love your pattern! I can’t think of an answer to your question. All I can think of is “You’re so Beautiful”. ;-D
Thanks for a chance to win!

Gosh I’ve been married so long I can’t even think of a wooing sing. I do love “never tear us apart” by INXS though – that was our bridal waltz
Permalink
Been waiting for this pattern! Hmmm… I think “Cigarettes and Coffee” by Otis (Redding) is great for the overnight driving part of a road trip (even though I don’t smoke) and for this time of year I’d probably start the “Crush Tape” with “Merry Christmas Baby (Sure Do Treat Me Right) also by Otis…..Or, “White Christmas” (by Otis, of course
Permalink

Well, I’m Married…but if I wasn’t I suppose it would be “I honestly love you” by Olivia Newton John. LOL, I used to sing that to a boy I was crushing on when I was in 7th grade…a century ago. Thanks and God bless!
Wow…this question. I have no idea. Um…Benny and the Jets? Just to laugh and set the tone for the trip.
Thx for the giveaway.
It would have to be “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. Oh yeah!
Oh gosh, that’s a hard question!! I must admit I wouldn’t put a song on that might give away the crush right at the start of the trip – too much risk of an uncomfortable journey if it wasn’t reciprocated! (Eek!!) (Excuse me while I go hide with my shyness now…
I find 1990’s songs are great for road trips. Nostelgia, good rhythms, and most people know the words. Fun!
I’ll play “You’re my favorite” by Sophie Madeleine! The lyrics are sooooo cute
Permalink
All I can think of is “Eye of the Tiger” which would really be a bad way to send a signal. But awkward is kind of how I roll.
The first song on my mix tape would be “Lets Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. Not hiding my feelings to him.
The first song I would put on my tape is Endless Love by Diana Ross. Thanks for the great giveaway!
‘Just my Kind’ by The Julie Ruin. Man, I wanna go make some mix tapes now! Thanks for the give away. Love the cassettes!
I doubt that my husband would let me take a road trip with someone I had a crush on so I would have to go with him. And I would play “Beat It” by Michael Jackson. thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net
Permalink
I would go old school and start with “How Deep Is your Love” by the Bee Gees.
Oh wow, I can’t think of just one song.
Probably something really nice by Dave Matthews. That said, NIN came to mind too. Guess it would depend on what kind of crush and how you feel about them
Permalink
Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder !
“It’s gonna to be me” N’SYNC- Because those dance moves
Permalink
Hmm, not sure I could pull this off without being super awkward… but I think A Whole New World from the Aladdin soundtrack could be just the thing.
If I really wanted to get the message across, how about “The Wedding March”? Just cut to the chase and get things on the table! How long is that trip???
It would never occur to me to put music on, I’d want to be chatting to him!
