Fear and Voxels (not in Las Vegas)

Lysa January 23, 2015 1

IMG_1677 Our youngest son (the one with he walrus on his back. He loves walruses) asked me to post his first animation on my blog. He’s never asked anything like that before, so of course I’m more than happy to share it with you. He’s pretty proud of it and I have to admit I was pretty blown away by it too (and for a couple of reasons). He built a model of himself wearing his purple dragon onzie in Voxel Critter Creator. Then he animated it. After animating it he noticed the legs just popped back and forth. Which led to his decision to add grass, so it looked like his character was walking. No one helped him he just figured it out! True, he’s inherited his techie genes from his dad. Technology makes logical sense to them. Watching him do this has inspired me. To see it click here (you have to turn on the animation button and click play.) He’s now, without even flinching, teaching himself Qubicle!

As you know, I’m registered and have been working on the first module of The Art and Business of Design. It of course has been great fun! The drawing parts I’m keen to jump into… I don’t even check the temperature of the water-GERONIMO!! Splash! Thursdays are another deal all together. Thursdays are Photoshop and Illustrator days. Those days, I read the info, take a break, read again, I try it, get stuck, try it again, get stuck, take a break, try again, get stuck, get stuck , get stuck… call my husband… oh, I get it, and finally it works!

I’ve always been cautious when learning computer-y things. In fact, thinking back, just a few short years ago I only used the computer to check email once in a while. I feel proud of how far I’ve come… but I know for this journey I’ve got a ways to go. However, seeing my son take things in stride, it’s given me a big oomph in my step!!

Oh and other interesting thing I discovered via my class Replix. It’s an app that is SOOOoo much fun. Here are some photos we… well, my son made.

Hey I downloaded the program at least! ;)

Up, up… and Away! A drawing from Krista Hennebury’s Fabric Stash

Lysa January 19, 2015 4

Diptych-A work made up of two matching parts.

WEBChris's-help-Lysa-Mair-3384

When I first sat with Krista’s fabric stash I didn’t have to spend too long on the composition. Right away I started stacking the fabric, I knew immediately I wanted to try a diptych. In the end I made two from her stash. This is the first one.

The drawing on the right is called, “Up, up…” The drawing on the left is called, “…And Away”

Side Lysa Mair-3390

Both were drawn on wood canvases, 2″ deep, my standard M.O. Each drawing is finished with a ribbon hanger along with a story about the stash. I believe backs should be considered just as much as the front, don’t you?

back Lysa Mair-3401back Lysa Mair-3482

“Up, up…” Measures 9″ high and 12″ deep. “…And Away” measures 12″ high and 12″wide.

*psst* you want to know a secret?… This is one of my favourites… shh! Don’t tell the other drawings.

UPDATE: My year of living “Fearlessly“: I’ve started my course of Make it in Design. There have been many deep breaths, a few brief pauses, followed by throwing caution to the wind plunges! I bob from knowing what I’m doing to, woe I need to swim back to shore now. They do encourage us to take things at our own pace but of course I don’t want to get behind either. Yup, there’s been a lot of concentration on balance. I’m working out the kinks with our schedules and balancing social media VS. drawing/making. All in all, so far so good.

If you want to see what I’ve been up to but you’re not on Instagram (Hana-tease, tease), or Facebook (Hana-tease, tease!) you can just click on those two links to take a peek. My friend Hana has been requesting updates on what I’m up to but she isn’t on any social media. I love to see when she uses her cel phone… the flip top makes me giggle and I love her for it!

Lysa Mair’s (from Lysa Flower) Fabric Stash

Lysa January 12, 2015 0

With the feature in Love Patchwork and Quilting, I’ve realized, there is so much so of my work I have never shown. I’m not 100% sure why I haven’t. I think it’s partly because I’m shy (and slightly shy about my work) BUT 2015 is my year to “live fearlessly” right! Here is a little something I’ve been working on for a while:

In late 2009, I started drawing fabric, mostly dresses. In the early part of 2010 I first drew my own fabric stash. By 2012 I had exhausted drawing my fabric stash and couldn’t bear to draw it yet again. I came up with a plan and started asking people I admired if I could draw their stash. Since then I’ve drawn seven different stashes (inadvertently they were all bloggers… or at least were as some point)! I’m really excited that Florence from Flossie Teacakes has accepted my invitation for the next stash to draw!

In the meantime, I’ve compiled all the other drawn stashes under my DRAW button, over there on the right. If you click on Drawing project: Bloggers and their fabric stashes, you can have a sneak peak of what I’m going to post over the next few months. Luckily for me the owners of the stashes are great sports and not only let me draw their stashes, they’ve also answered 5 fun interview questions. The last question is my favourite!

I’ll start start with my stash first. Here are my 5 questions and answers. Sorry the first question is a little redundant of the information above.

lysa_01_300

How did you end up drawing fabric? When my youngest started grade one and was in school full time I went back to teaching. I taught a figure drawing class using a draped model. I’ve always loved drawing the figure but realized I was enjoying drawing the fabric more than the model! I began to draw dresses and piles of clothing. Then I began to draw my fabric stash, which led to a show in 2010. The following year I focused just on fabric. About this time I was really getting into the Modern Quilting movement. I soon realized there was whole world of stashes to draw! Which I began to do and will continue to do on an ongoing basis.

Who has the largest stash you’ve ever seen? Smallest? I met an art quilter in the summer of 2013. She was from the Ridge Meadow Quilt Guild. I got to have a look at her studio. She has and entire wall, like 30 feet of cabinets, all full of fabric (colour separated, of course.) She also had drawers and drawers of fat quarter. Personally I try to buy per project but will sometimes splurge on, “oh my God I can not live this out this!” fabric. And I love buying fabric, don’t get me wrong. This stash was so HUGE. I don’t know how anyone could sew all that fabric in one life time. Very impressive but HUGE!

However, I’d say the runner up to her would be Cathy from Blueberry patch. She has a pretty big stash, her husband calls it “the store”! The smallest would be Lesley Stenning’s. When she was living in North Vancouver she had a sewing machine in a small corner of her kitchen, with one or two cabinets of fabric. And oh, it was such a lovely collection! It may have been a small stash but the fabric was gorgeous!

Let’s talk about your stash and colour choices. Do you have a favourite colour? Colour combo’s? Colours you have aversions to? I love yellow but I’m really particular about the hue. My father in law loves yellow too but I don’t think of it as the same colour because the hues are so different . He likes school bus yellow while I like butter, sunshine, wheat yellow (see what I mean, I’m particular about my yellows).

Colour combos: I love pink and orange together and I’ve always loved teal and red.

Colour aversion? Hmm, I used to have an aversion to grey but came around to embracing it. I’ve never been a big fan of purple but I’m starting to embrace it too… mostly because it’s my youngest son’s favourite colour.

Melody Miller tweeted that she thought these were insane! I took that as a good thing and kept going.)

Where do you keep your fabric stash? Do you have a system for storage and organizing it? The majority of my stash is in my studio work table. Although, when taking photos of my stash for a Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild feature, called “5 things about you”, I realized I’ve spread it around my house as well. Making it a bit bigger than I’m willing to admit. I try not to let it get to big… but sometimes I don’t try very hard.

You’re from the Prairies, the Prairies are prone to tornadoes. Let’s say your visiting and you’ve brought your entire fabric stash with you. Whoosh! A big storm sets in and you’re lifted into the air, Wizard of Oz style. You can only reach three pieces of your stash, which ones do you grab before landing on the wicked witch of the East and take her ruby slippers? I’d find some way to grab my Melody Miller’s Viewmasters, Kitty Yoshida’s City Girl (in the pink) and Suzy Ultman’s Coffee Cups! Oh and I love polka dots and gingham, which is great if I get to wear Dorthy’s dress as I skip down the yellow brick road!

2015-The year of living FEARLESSLY!

Lysa January 1, 2015 6

I’ve done it. I’ve committed. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. The comparison would be buying a ticket to the largest roller coaster you can imagine. As of right now I’m strapped in. There is no turning back. I’m not even going to look back. There is no point. I’m so excited and terrified. My tummy has already started rehearsing the butterflies. I am ready! I don’t know what loops and turns are in store for me but I’m ready to embrace it. My plan? It’s true even on the smallest roller coaster I scream like a banshee (it’s like a knee-jerk reaction, I can’t help myself. Seriously even on the kiddie rides! Embarrassing, but true!). My plan is to keep my eyes wide open, to throw up my arms, scream my head off and enjoy every last drop of this ride.

I’ve registered with The Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design! All three modules!

You're in edit

I’ve spent the last four years drawing and studying fabric. Don’t get me wrong, my Stash Drawing Project is still on going but I have to admit after completing my 2014 Calendar project with Esmari I felt a little like, “Well, what now?” Then, somehow, I stumbled upon a link from Elizabeth Olwen talking about this online class she took. As soon as I saw it, my instant gut reaction was, “I want to do this!” I nonchalantly told my husband about it on the phone, enthusiastically and immediately he said, “You should do that!” I was surprised by his gusto and certainty. Class starts on the 12th of January but I’ve also preregistered for a mini course that starts on the 3rd called “Developing your Signature Style”. It lasts 5 days and it’s FREE!

So there you have it, I have declared 2015 will be my year of living FEARLESSLY!

Love Patchwork & Quilting = Awesome!

Lysa December 29, 2014 5

So this happened! Florence from Flossie Teacakes sent me a picture via Twitter a few days ago!

@lysaflower It’s you! @LoveQuiltingMag, Issue 17 :) pic.twitter.com/AQl8S3ttYq

— Flossie Teacakes (@FlossieTeacake1) December 22, 2014

Ta-Da! I am in Issue 17 of Love Patchwork & Quilting!!! Happy dance, happy dance!!! I owe Florence a huge round of thanks. Here’s how it all went down… Back in May Florence she sent me this Tweet:

@lysaflower Wow! Your work is incredible. So beautiful & esp. on the wood. Would you mind if I share some of your stash drawings on my blog? — Flossie Teacakes (@FlossieTeacake1) May 28, 2014

Followed by her blog post (which is a lovely must read I might add!)…

Flossie's blog

…THEN Love Patchwork & Quilting sent an email saying this:

Hi Lysa,

I’m so delighted to have found you via Flossie Teacakes! We would absolutely love to do a little write up about you and your gorgeous rendering s of fabric stashes in the news pages of Love Patchwork & Quilting. Do you think you could provide some pics for us to use on page and perhaps 100 words about yourself?

Huge thanks and if you have any question please do get in touch!

Alice (Deputy Editor, Love Patchwork & Quilting)

<insert Happy dance!!! AGAIN> I know a lot of happy dancing!

Have you seen the magazine?! It’s so beautiful! It’s a UK mag AND we can get it at Chapters/Indigo here in Canada! I just bought issue 14 before Christmas. It’s completely drool worthy! I’m not sure when issue 17 will make it to Canada but I will keep you posted!
