I walked in to a Great Notion, the clouds parted, a sun beam highlighted the bolt of fabric. I think I even heard ANGELS!… No wait, I think it might have been choir boys singing… I knew I had found my fabric for my FVMQG Ugly Christmas Sweater contest. Good old Alexander Henry Pin-up Fabric! My sons were equally embarrassed and disgusted as I was impressed with the fabric I had brought home!

I now had the fabric, I needed a sweatshirt but most of all I needed blinky lights! My friend Sonja had made an awesome Halloween Mabel costume for her daughter from the show Gravity Falls. The character Mabel always wears blinky light sweatshirts.  Sonja shared the secret of her blinky light resource (Michael’s Poster lights) and I was off cutting, sewing and embellishing.

True, my ugly Christmas sweater doesn't play music (we added that for effect) but still…

Nothing like a good old Christmas project to get you in the mood for, well..Christmas! The sweat shirt was a hit at the guild meeting, although there was some tough competition. There were some jingle bells (that demanded quite for effect), lots of garland. Even one person held up a star above their head and POOF! They became a Christmas tree right before our very eyes! In the end there was no real prize for the competition. However, I think we were all content with the laughter that left us exhausted.

I wish you joy during your Christmas frenzy. And, that it brings you giggles and sufficient embarrassment to your children!

We just had our first snowfall! For us west coasters, that’s a big deal! We watched one evening as snowflakes sparkled and danced about! I know I should have put up my Christmas lights last weekend when it was warm. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it before December 1st.

Again snow!

…And speaking of December 1st, here is our,  last page of the Warp & Weft’s Calendar. You can download it HERE.  It feels bitter-sweet some how. A big, big thanks to Esmari for supplying me with such lovely goodies to draw all year long. As well for inviting me to join the Warp & Weft Sewing Society. I’ve loved every moment of it! Side note: Did you know Esmari is having a HUGE sale today? She is! And this is the last day, quick go have a look!

Drawn April 2013. Here’s how this came about:

I bought these lovely trims from Cathy Mackay’s booth “The Steam Trunk Craft Works” in 2012. I took a photograph of what I bought as soon as I got home, however I never posted it until a year later. Cathy saw the photo in a post I did showing off a challenge our guild did with her Sari silks. She contacted me and asked if I would draw this photograph.

At first the drawing was exactly as the photograph. However, after living with the drawing for about a month, Cathy asked if I could add to it. We agreed it looked a little blank behind the pink lace.

Cathy lent me some of her spools and I went to work! 2 1/2 spools became 4 1/2 spools but we kept the name.

I asked her if she wouldn’t mind if I held on to some of the larger spools for a bit longer. I wanted to draw them.

Which got me thinking… Cathy should be in my drawing project! I asked and she said yes!

The rest is history.

I’ve since done two more drawings of Cathy’s trims: “Some Pom Poms, Some Rick Rack and Some Lace Walk into a Bar” and “Jars of Pom Poms”

Yesterday I was going to post about some Bee Blocks I finished… It just didn’t seem right though… and today it still doesn’t seem right. You see one of my oldest and dearest friends Teresa, lost one of her best friends. I can’t even imagine how heart broken Teresa, Georgina and Helen must be over the loss of Tricia.

This past weekend I bumped into some friends of mine, Carol and Mike Browne (who I adore) at a vintage market. I was so delighted to see them. It was the best-est surprise. With Teresa, Georgina, Helen and Tricia in mind, time seems very fleeting. We’re all busy but do we really take the time to always say, “hey, I love you” or “I think you are SO awesome” or how about, “I love spending time with you.”  And it is because of this, I think we should declare today, November 18th, as #hugafriendnowday in honour of Tricia, Teresa, Georgina and Helen’s friendship.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Go find your friend. Bumping into your friend by accident, is even better!
  2. Grab them (gently but with excitement on your face!)
  3. Give them the biggest appreciative hug EVAR (and a kiss on the cheek. However the kiss is optional)
  4. Now tell them you love them.  For example “I love you Bro” or “Hey you, I love you, I love you!” Etc…you get the idea.

*Virtual or on the phone hugs and kisses sent with love is totally valid too!

No time like the present.

Let’s celebrate these ladies and send them tons and tons of love.

Kim Taylor

WANTED: 30 to 40 pieces of fabric that are 2 yards/2 metres in length and 45 inches/1.25 metres in width

It can be pieced or all one length of material. The only requirement is that the edges are finished so they don’t fray (leaving the selvages is totally okay.) Any kind of fabric is perfect (well, not polar fleece or vinyl)  and any print or solid will do!

Once again, I’m teaming up with Kimberly Taylor from the Grow Hope Foundation. Kimberly (who took the stunning photo above) is wanting to go back to Uganda in January 2015 and give away this fabric to these lovely ladies in this village. These ladies work extremely hard to get water each day, feed and take care of their families. They especially like to wrap their hips in fabric to make them look as big as possible for when they dance. You gotta love that! It’s also used to carry their babes, to sit on (while they visit and make beads) among other things.

I know I have some fabric socked away and  I LOVE the idea that it will go onto a new life swinging on someone’s hips!
