A skateboarder and a quilter walk into a bar…have you heard this one before?

Lysa March 16, 2014 0

Well, actually we couldn’t get into the bar because the skateboarder was under age. So instead we made this together!

This is what happens when skateboarders and quilters hang out.

In February we went back to Alberta to visit our family and friends. While we were staying with our friends their son Alex was working on putting grip tape on a board for a client. Alex and his brother Nick started their own long board skateboard shop in their basement this fall called Detour Boards Maintenance-resourceful lads. It was super fun to work on a project together and I’m ready to grip tape EVERTHING! But I guess it only make sense to stick to skateboards.  I wish I had more to play with. You don’t have a skateboard you need grip tape put on, do you? I can hook you up.

Quiet, wide open spaces. I'm home.

I also brought some fabric to play with. Instead of collaborating with Alex for this project I had a whole lot of help from their cat Mao. So I’ve decided this pillow cover should go to Mao in my appreciation of her helpfulness. Seems only fair, right?

What the… it’s March already?! Whoosh! There went January! Vroom, there went February and now it’s March! That means it’s time for another calender-free for you to download! Just Click HERE and it’s all yours. The new twist this month is it’s brought to you from the Warp and Weft’s Sewing Society,  which I have been ever so humbly invited into by a very talented group. March_Free

This month, with fresh spring fabric from Warp and Weft Exquisite Textiles, I went old school; back to drawing stacks of fabric.

The leaning fabric, from left to right is:

Petite Street-Houses by Wendy Kendall for Dashwood Studio

Bark and Branch-Line Leaf Grey by Eloise Renouf for Cloud9

Bluebird Park-Rabbits by Kate and Birdie for Moda

The other fabric from top to bottom is:

Bluebird Park -Birds by Kate and Birdie for Moda

Bluebird Park- Peach Magnolias by Kate and Birdie for Moda

Glimma-Mineral Dust by Lotta Jansdotter for Windham Fabrics

I just want to send out a BIG thanks to Esmari of Warp and Weft! A lovely person who sells lovely fabric and who knows lovely people… le sigh!

A new year a…new Quilt Bee

Lysa February 24, 2014 3

Just the kind of email a person likes to receive, “Would you like to join our on-line quilt bee?” Why yes, yes I would! Jennifer from Second Hand Dinosaur sent me pretty much the same email around New Years. Jennifer, along with her friend Riain (a pole dancing quilter, not two things you always see in the same sentence, which makes her awesome!), have put together a new quilt bee called Stash Fabulous Bee. I’m super excited to be a part of it. This month was Joanne’s block where she asked for two 12.5″ blocks with a cross in the middle. Done!

Feb blocks for Jo in the Stash Fabulous Bee 2014

This will be my third on-line quilt bee and it’s slightly different then the other two I’ve been in. For this bee instead of sending out fabric to everyone you sew from your own stash. It should be pretty interesting. I have an idea percolating for my month (in May)! I’ll keep you posted.

These two birds eye’s, in a happy accident, placed themselves perfectly. Do you recognize them? Do you know any of the Pigeon books by Mo Willems? “Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” or “Don’t let the Pigeon stay Up Late” (a personal favourite of mine),  just to name a few.  The idea behind these kids books is the pigeon has restrictions put on him and being a very clever pigeon he has all types of reason he should be allowed to do such things. They are very funny books and printed in the the most beautiful colourways. I found the fabric at Spool of Thread early last summer and just about lost my mind! I made PJ pants for myself and my son. I also made a reversible pillow case for him as well.

I see you look'n at me.

I think Mo Willems should do another couple of books called something like “Don’t let the Pigeon Use Your Sewing Machine” or “Don’t let the Pigeon Cut Your Fabric” or how about “Don’t Let The Pigeon Run Your Quilt Bee!” I’d love to see what shenanigans the pigeon would get up too. I’d buy it.

I think they should write a book called "Don't let the pigeon into your fabric stash." I'd read it.

For you my sweet, February’s 2014 Free Calendar

Lysa February 1, 2014 0

Was it me or did January go by really fast?! It’s like I blinked and here we are in February! A month with one statutory holiday in British Columbia, called Family day. Which I’m quite excited about because I’m going to spend it with, you guessed it, family… just not in BC. Most of our Family lives in Alberta so, that’s where we are going, to the land of snow. We’ll be having wiener roasts, drinking hot chocolate and snowmobiling! It’s been a while so I’m feeling romantic about it.

Appropriately so, considering the month. Love it or hate it, February is also the month of Valentine’s day! Everyone likes a little treat on Valentine’s day, so I’m sending mine to you early. . . and in the form of a calendar. Once again I’ve teamed up with Esmari from Warp and Weft Exquisite Textiles . Just click here and the February calendar will be yours to printout or to keep on your computer.

This month I used Merchant & Mills Fine Black Safety Pins,  from their box of 5 pin set. They’re quite lovely and glide in and out of fabric. They don’t get stuck like other ones. Doesn’t that make you shiver when they do that? I kind of have a crush on the Merchant & Mills products but you might know that from last month.

From top right to left the lovely fabric used was :

  • Damask, Aubergine- Spring 2013 – Ty Pennington for Ty Pennington Impressions
  • Indo Sunset- Fall 2012 – Ty Pennington for Ty Pennington Impressions
  • The Birds and the Bees-Squirrel – Tula Pink for Freespirit

Ty Pennington, isn’t Ty Pennington that hottie from Trading Spaces. I guess he’s better known for Extreme Make Over nowadays.

Then bottom right to left:

  • Birds and Berries – Lauren & Jessi Jung For Moda
  • The Birds and the Bees-Meteror – Tula Pink for Freespirit
  • Bromely- Breeze Brown – Vicotia & Albert Museum for Rownan Fabrics

Have a lovely February, keep warm and know you’ve already received a Valentine treat! The rest will be gravy!

Reinvention

Lysa January 27, 2014 1

Ah,ha! I figured out my word for 2014. Cynthiaf had posted about her word for 2014. She doesn’t do resolutions but she picks a word each year. This year her word is action. Which is a great word but it wasn’t until last week when I did this…

I kind of, sort of, got a trim...

…cut all my hair off, that I realized my word was reinvention. It seems like we are getting stuff done around the house and studio plus finishing other projects up. Things that we’ve been meaning to for a long time. Sigh… and it feels great! Things are moving forward and with that momentum I’m going to be doing some changes, not big huge changes, but a few changes that you might notice over the next little bit on my site (with of course the help of Green Couch Designs who built this beautiful site for me!).

"Why yes, I did get a bit of a trim."

In the mean time I’ll keep you posted! And just as Cynthia asked at the end of her post, if you had to pick a word for yourself right now, (for 2014 or not) what would it be?
