5 easy IT steps to trouble free sewing!

Lysa January 13, 2014 0

TV Show - The It Crowd Wallpapers and Backgrounds

Trouble free sewing, isn’t it the best! Have you ever watched the IT Crowd (IT stands for Information Technology department)? If you haven’t I think you should, especially the episode  called “The Work Outing” . I miss dialled a phone number the other day and it actually said,“Hello, you’ve reached blah, blah, blah’s IT department” (well, it wasn’t called blah, blah, blah but I can’t recall the company’s name but I’m sure you know what I mean)” Have  you tried turning it off and on again? Please leave a message.”I was dumb founded and while I was asking myself if I heard correctly I hung up at the beep. What I should have done was say, “Best voice mail ever, that was awesome!” And then hung up.

I wish I could take credit for this brilliant cross stitch, sadly I can’t. BUT if you’d like this little beauty as a screen saver you can, or choose a different one from here.

It is true, it’s simple and my husband has been telling me for years when I call him for tech support, have you tried turning it off and on again. Essential my sewing machine is a computer and when ever I have a glitch, I hear him in my head saying “Try turning it off and on again.” More times than not it fixes the problem! I also, along with these five other simple steps, have fixed skipped stitches, thread nests and other general sewing annoyances.

Basting can be a bitch BUT it has recently become my BFF.

1. Rethread that machine! Including the bobbin, pesky thing.

How it gets discombobulated I have no idea and honestly I don’t even want to know why. I just want to sew!

2. Put a new needle in.

I hate throwing out needles. I’m not sure why, I have a hard time believing that pointy thing I’m touching is too dull for my fabric. More often then not quite simply I forget to do it. I  know some people change their needle every project. It sounds like a good idea but so does eating your veggies. I do aim to eat my veggies every day but that bun sitting over there looks oh so tasty and it feels so fresh, mmm! My machine will often tell me to stop eating buns… wait, no, it tells me it’s time to change the needle when I realize it sounds like a freight train. Ca chunk, ca chunk. It doesn’t toot though. That would be cool if it did!

3. Oil it!

Oil, it’s a wonderful thing! If I’ve already changed my needle and my machine still sounds like freight train it’s time to oil it! I don’t wait for my machine’s screen to tell me. If I did, I think it would be too late.

4. Pop off the base plate and de-lint.

A few your years back I went to a LA Modern Quilt Guild meeting and  they had a speaker talking about machine maintenance. She suggested not using the little weenie (my word, not hers) brushes that you get with machine but instead get a wide paint brush to help dust it all away. Dust and lint can do crazy things to your machine. My machine once stopped stitching correctly… like all together. It was very distressing! I broke the news to my husband that my two year old machine had died a quick and painless death. We Googled it, I popped off the base plate, lint, lint, lint everywhere! Now I always de-lint under my base plate, keeping it pretty darn clean. You can check if you want to!

5. Walk away! But say a few kind words before you leave.

Yup, just walk away. Turn it off. Talk nicely to your machine as you say goodnight. Alternatively you might want to say, “I can see you’re not feeling well, we’ll talk about it later when you’ve calmed down.” Give it a little pat (or a kiss if you prefer). Say, “night, night” and walk out. Be firm but loving. Don’t think about it until the next day. Perhaps watch a little IT Crowd? Get yourself some rest and when you greet your machine the next time you see it, greet it happily with a positive attitude. Truly tried and tested!

…and of course, if all else fails,

Happy 2014…Calender!

Lysa January 1, 2014 7

2014, Wow! Happy New Year! I have a present for you! You can call it a belated Chritmas present. Speaking of it, did you have a Merry Christmas? Were you naughty? Either way I still have a little somthin’ somthin’ for you! Do you remember me telling you about Esmari from Warp and Weft Exquisite Textiles? A few months back our guild did a challenge with some fabric from her store. This past December I came to Esmari with an idea and she happily accepted and embraced it. It’s a joint venture really. Esmari has sent me a box of goodies… to draw! This box she sent is brimming full of so many lovely things! I can’t wait! On the first of every month for 2014 we both will be posting on our blogs a calendar picture and it’s free for you to download. Just click here! And presto it’s yours to print out or keep on your computer.

January is a little drawing of the Merchant and Mill Sewing Repair Kit! It seemed to make the most sense since, January is the month we take stock, set goals and paint a picture of what we want our year to look like. And, well, I’ve been on a bit of a Downton Abbeybinge, soooo that probably added to me falling in love with this little sewing kit! It almost makes me wish for a mishap. It’s unbelievable high quality! Most sewing repair kits-cringe, the thread, it give me goose bumps, it’s right up with  cotton that’s in pill bottles -yeek! Not this set. It just like Esmari’s store… exquisite! And, I hope your 2014 is… exquisite!

Christmas Stockings

Lysa December 19, 2013 4

In 2007 I walked into Chintz and Company. I made a bee line for the downstairs as I was looking for some fabric (I know big suprise!). My family was waiting for me in the car and as I hoped out the vehicle I heard a “don’t be long” as I closed the door. Which I meant to do but then I saw the most beautiful trim I had ever seen! Screech, the power shopping ground to a halt. Nope not what I was looking for BUT it is here that I that I decided I would make us all new Christmas stockings. I had made everyone stockings in the early 90’s but it was time for something new. Of course, every year after 2007 I kept buying fabric to match the trim. I’d also started to find other outstanding trims on my travels. Then of course a few years ago at Creative Stitches I came across The Steam Trunk Craftworks vintage trims! It was like a the heavens opened up and went AWWWWWWWwwwww!

I really meant to make Christmas stocking ages ago and every year I’d joke, the nice thing about Christmas is it comes around each year so there was no rush. This year I just couldn’t take it any longer and decided, right! That’s it… this is the year! I still have a few more to do, which I will most likely squeak in just before the Christmas eve deadline (and I’ll probably post after Christmas) but let’s do show and tell of what I have now!

Shhh! Don’t tell her, this stocking is for my Mom.

This is the trim that started it All!

As tempted as I was to add a “F” to the end, it’s for my Mother In Law.

When I was making stockings, I came across this fabric and trim. I really loved the combination but I wasn’t sure who I was making it for. Then my lovely friend Hana was telling me she didn’t even have a stocking. Light bulb moment and it all became clear who I was making it for!

I have two boys and this isn’t for either of them. Mak’s parents, kind of grew up with us, we all meet just after we had all moved, we all ended up getting engaged and married, had babies and bought houses all around the same time. Mak is 10 months older than our oldest son, so we think of her as our niece. She and her sister also give me the great opportunity to get all girly! Which I so welcome!

KD, no not Kraft Dinner, Cadence, Cadie for short, is Mak’s sister, said she her favourite colour was bright orange! Knowing her Mom, ya, that wasn’t going to fly so this was our compromise! These lovely, yummy feather trims I bought last year at Britex Fabrics in San Fransisco!

If we don’t get to chat before Christmas, have a very Merry and cozy one! Don’t for get to hang up your stockings!

My Feature in Made In’s Magazine, an Etsy Store and a Craft Sale!

Lysa November 27, 2013 0

made in magazine

Wow, so much has happened since we last chatted. First of all, tee hee!  made in!  Here is my feature in made in magazine! Crazy right? I feel a bit naked but I’m so grateful to the magazine. What an amazing opportunity! Plus to be included with so many amazing people is very humbling! I really love biographies and I love learning about what everyone does! I think that is what made in is really about, people and their stories. Mostly their stories of how and what they create but each one is so different and interesting. I believe made in’s next issue comes out in the spring (March-ish). I’ll keep you posted.

The next thing that has happened is… deep breath… I finally took the plunge! After many years of waiting I have finally opened an Etsy shop! Woo Hoo! Sure, I have only have one listing right now but I’m on the game board at least! For some reason I felt very weird about opening it. I’m not really sure why but I’ve had enough interest in my cards, calenders and drawings that it made sense to do it now. I feel a bit like I’m free falling right now but I’m confident I’ll figure it out as I go, or before I hit the ground-eep! Maybe tomorrow I’ll have two listings, wouldn’t that be wild and crazy!

And finally the next big thing on my list is I was invited to join another craft fair. How nice is that! Thanks Nell! It’s in Deep Cove, have you been there? I love Deep Cove especially the sinful do-nuts at Honey Donughts & Goodies!
